Have you… seen the musical? I agree there’s issues with it but the idea that everyone forgives Evan at the end and everything’s fine is… not true. He loses all his friends and the only person who sticks by his at the end is his mom because she’s his mom. I’m not the world’s biggest DEH fan but it annoys me when people act like Evan didn’t face any consequences and like it’s some kind of aspirational story.

as someone who read the book THEN saw the musical. 100% the book didn't make everyone forgive Evan and I was happy with that ending. The musical was good, but not nearly as good as the book

If you sit down and listen to the full soundtrack, I think it’s clear that the story doesn’t condone Evan’s actions. However, the breakout hit song was “waving through a window”, which happens to be one of the few songs that doesn’t involve the big lie.

I know the full plot and still do think it's a great musical. For the simple reason that what people miss about it is that Evan is so outsided and alone at the start of the story and so shocked connor even wanted to sign his cast at all because NO ONE DID. Evan is implied to be at the start of the story actually not far from where Connor is. The point is that Evan wasn't there yet, but he would've met the same fate if the plot didn't happen. The charity was in Connor's name but it was for people like Connor AND Evan. Listen to Disappear again, please. I need people to really understand Evan's "I Want" song is For Forever. That's all he ever wanted: a true friend. And his friendship with Connor might be fake, and a constructed lie he's telling, but it's as close to a real friend he's ever had. And before you bring up Jared, it's clear in the whole story they're family friends but even Jared doesn't like him.

In all respect, a musical isn't terrible simply because the main character isn't the hero in the story. DEH is super open and clear with the fact that Evan isn't a good person, and even so, Evan clears with Zoey in Only Us to an extent that her attraction to him is not based off of his relationship with Connor before starting any kind of relationship, and nobody forgives him in the end. Like, literally nobody. The people who know disengage with him, the people who don't forget about him because Alana takes over the Connor Project which did raise 50,000 for a good cause because of Evan, and he goes back to being a loner who only talks to his mom. Zoey gets a happier ending than him, like, in the final song literally written out. The show is about a teenager who makes some really bad choices, judging it as if its supposed to be about a good person is a misjudgment.
