Upgrading a Water House Cat Nest with Heat – A Stray Cat Community Finds Cozier Winter Shelter When winter strikes, especially after snowfall in mountainous areas, freezing temperatures can jeopardize the comfort - and even survival - of stray cats. In this video, I document a crucial upgrade project: installing a heating system in our water house cat nest, which, until now, lacked a heat source. It's one of four main stray cat communities I care for, each with its own arrangement and cast of feline residents. The story begins as I discover one poor kitty desperately licking a frozen water bowl - an ineffective way to drink water in the icy cold. Recognizing that some newcomers may not realize there's a designated spot for warm water, I guide the cat to a bamboo tube where heated water is dispensed. But that's just the start of a deeper issue: a long-haired cat, dubbed Little Lion, and a big orange cat are sleeping outside, refusing to use the nest's second floor. Why? Because the water-based cat house has fewer cats - so with less body heat, it's simply not warm inside. Determined to solve this, I remove several insulation boards and lay down electric heating film. I also install windows and curtains to trap heat without blocking sunlight, which helps keep the environment cozy and reduces bacteria during the day. While working, I notice how each cat has its own social dynamic - like the gentle yet imposing long-haired chieftain who watches over everyone. In the background, other cat tribe members show up, curious about the renovations and eager to test the new sleeping spaces. With thick cotton mats, improved insulation, and more comfortable entrances (including smaller doorways fitted with curtains), the nest rapidly becomes more inviting. Evening rolls around, and cats from all communities gather at our alliance restaurant for a hot chicken breast feast. Afterward, they each head back to their favorite nook. I delight in seeing a reclusive cat named Little Bat return to the water house nest, navigating the new curtain without hesitation. Another shy cat, Sweet Little Longhair, graduates from the newbie shelter to this newly upgraded domain, presumably under the benevolent protection of the long-haired chieftain. With such inclusive leadership, bullying is minimal; in fact, the community fosters warmth and acceptance. This video highlights how a bit of creativity, construction, and compassion can transform a cold, drafty shelter into a toasty haven - ensuring that even the most timid strays find a safe, sociable place to call home.
