August 11, 2026 Update: Still waiting on “Lala” — but Hawaii is now firmly in the spotlight for this weekend. Perhaps on island time! First Alert meteorologist Jennifer Robbins explains why it may start turning towards the islands this weekend once it does develop. A tropical system about 950–1,000 miles east-southeast of the islands has a 90% chance of developing over the next 48 hours. While confidence is growing that Hawaii could be impacted this weekend, the severity of those impacts is still very uncertain because the system has not formed yet. Here’s what we’re watching: Friday: Fire weather concerns increase as winds strengthen and drier air moves in. Saturday: Strong to potentially damaging winds are possible, depending heavily on the storm’s eventual track and strength. Heavy rain: Tropical moisture could produce periods of heavy rain, especially across east and southeast-facing slopes, with flash flooding possible. Surf: A large easterly to southeasterly swell could build quickly, with warning-level surf of 15+ feet possible into the weekend. The big key: Once “Lala” develops and becomes better organized, we should have a much clearer idea of its track and impacts. Now is a good time to start preparing — and check in on loved ones, neighbors, and especially our kupuna. Make sure everyone knows the plan and has what they need before the weekend.
