Today was supposed to be a routine wellness visit for my 8 year old son. Instead, we left with a diagnosis we never saw coming: Type 1 Diabetes. One minute we were at the pediatrician’s office, and the next we were being sent straight to the pediatric ER to monitor him and begin learning everything we need to know about insulin, blood sugar, and a completely new way of life. I haven’t stopped crying. I keep asking God, “Why?” How long has he been dealing with these symptoms before I realized something wasn’t right? Did I miss something? Could I have noticed sooner? The mom guilt is heavy right now. But as overwhelming as this day has been, I also feel like Type 1 Diabetes isn’t talked about enough. Before today, I didn’t fully understand the warning signs. Looking back, some symptoms were there • Increased thirst • Frequent urination • Increased hunger • Weight loss • Fatigue • Mood changes If sharing our story helps even one parent recognize these signs sooner, then it’s worth sharing. Today our family is scared, overwhelmed, exhausted, and heartbroken. And just learning a completely new way of life and one prayer at a time. If you’re a T1D parent, I’d love any advice, encouragement, or things you wish you knew in the beginning, foods that help etc. Please say a prayer for our boy as we begin this journey 💙 #t1diabetes #t1diabetic #autoimmunedisease #type1diabetesawareness #T1D
