It's easy to recognize emotional unavailability in someone else. It's much harder to notice when you're the one keeping people at a distance. You can genuinely want love, marriage and companionship while still having habits that make real emotional intimacy uncomfortable. So how can you tell if you might be emotionally unavailable without realizing it? Here are 5 signs worth paying attention to: 1. YOU KEEP FALLING FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN’T FULLY CHOOSE YOU The married man. The man who “isn't ready.” The long-distance situation that never progresses. The man who gives you just enough attention to keep you hoping. You may genuinely want him to commit, but there's something strangely safe about wanting someone who can't completely show up. Because as painful as chasing unavailable love is, you never have to experience the vulnerability of actually having it. 2. YOU LOSE INTEREST WHEN SOMEONE IS TOO AVAILABLE When he's inconsistent, you're thinking about him constantly. When a good man communicates clearly, plans dates, likes you openly and doesn't make you chase? Suddenly there's “no spark.” Sometimes what feels like chemistry is actually the emotional high of uncertainty. Healthy interest can feel strangely quiet when you're used to earning someone's attention. 3. YOU WANT LOVE, BUT YOU HATE NEEDING ANYONE You'll help everybody else. But when YOU need support? “I'm fine. I'll handle it.” You don't want to depend on anyone, ask for help or give someone enough importance that they could disappoint you. Independence is healthy. But if needing another person feels dangerous, intimacy becomes difficult. I talk about where patterns like these begin in my guide, 7 Steps to Healing the Little Girl Within (you can download it through the link in my bio), because sometimes the woman who prides herself on needing nobody was once the little girl who learned that depending on people wasn't safe. 4. YOU START LOOKING FOR AN EXIT WHEN THINGS GET SERIOUS You wanted him badly at first. Then he starts talking about commitment. Suddenly you're noticing EVERYTHING 😂. His laugh annoys you. He's texting too much. You're questioning whether you're attracted to him. You start comparing him to other men. Sometimes finding flaws becomes a convenient way to create distance when someone is getting close enough to actually know you. 5. YOU’RE VERY COMFORTABLE GIVING LOVE, BUT UNCOMFORTABLE RECEIVING IT Compliments make you awkward. Someone taking care of you makes you feel indebted. A man doing something thoughtful makes you wonder what he wants. When someone genuinely loves you, part of you is waiting for the catch. So you may choose relationships where you're constantly proving, helping, fixing and giving because being needed feels safer than being deeply loved. Emotional availability isn't just wanting a relationship. It's being willing to be known. To communicate what you need. To receive. To trust gradually. To let someone matter to you without trying to control every possible outcome. And sometimes the biggest realization isn't: “Why do I keep meeting emotionally unavailable people?” It's: “Why do emotionally unavailable relationships feel so familiar to me?” Which one do you think is the hardest to recognize in yourself? 👀
