@samanthabosseffect: One day, your children will probably ask. “What really happened?” “Why did you and Dad divorce?” “Why did you and Mom split up?” When that day comes, I believe they deserve an honest answer. But I also believe they deserve the right timing. Not when they’re 8. Not when they’re 12. Not when they’re caught in the middle of a custody exchange. Wait until they’re adults. Wait until they have the emotional maturity to process what they’re about to hear. Wait until they have the coping skills to separate your marriage from their relationship with each parent. Wait until they have the support system to ask follow-up questions and work through difficult emotions. Children are naturally curious. That doesn’t mean they’re emotionally ready. There’s a big difference. As parents, it’s our job to protect them from carrying burdens they aren’t equipped to carry. If you know you’re telling the truth, you don’t have to rush. The truth isn’t going anywhere. You don’t have to convince your child while they’re young. You don’t have to compete with the other parent’s version of events. Trust that one day they’ll be old enough to ask their own questions. And when they do, answer with honesty. Answer with compassion. Answer without trying to recruit them to your side. The goal isn’t to win your child over. The goal is to help them understand what happened without placing the weight of your marriage on their shoulders. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our children is letting them be children for as long as possible. Know better. Do better. #highconflictdivorce #coparenting #divorcewithkids #parentingafterdivorce #protectyourchildren

My 14 year old son told me last night, “mom I’m older now and I’m not letting anyone talk bad about you, ever”

My 17 year old is more aware and very neutral… he was the scapegoat unfortunately 💔 however my 15 year old (the golden child) is facing the hardest loyalty conflict and I’m in a place now where a face to face conversation is impossible and communication is controlled and monitored so right now I’m loving from a distance 💔💔

my son is only 5 and has already started asking why me and daddy don't live together and all I can say is that's not a question I can answer for you right now, when you're older if you have questions, but it's not a discussion for a child. just know that mommy and daddy both love you. two homes one heart.

Mine are already asking because they’re observant and they know his behaviour is not okay. I am careful but I don’t lie. I tell them that they should trust themselves.

Even as an adult they don’t need to know specifics, it’s really none of their business why the relationship ended. I won’t tell my sons that their father cheated and lied, I won’t let them have those negative thoughts about their father because it wasn’t their relationship that ended. Their relationship with their dad is growing and even as a young adult they don’t need to learn about mistakes he has made in his past. Things just don’t work out sometimes and they will learn that in their adulthood.

I can only hope… manipulation is so strong on young kids and it’s heartbreaking.

Thank you, I needed to hear this now, mine are 13 and 14 and ask questions but they are not ready to hear the real answers, from my perspective.

I could not tell them all the things their Dad did to me. It will shatter them and they might start hating him. I feel I have to somehow protect them from all that information

My teenager has asked questions many times. I finally told her that when she is an adult, we will have the conversation but there may be some things I still don’t tell her. It will depend on the situation. Not only are my kids not ready to handle it, they are still trying to figure out their own relationship with their dad and I don’t want my story to affect that.

My kids 10 and 12 did ask me. I did tell them and they both admitted, Dad we know. that killed me. both stated Dad its not fair your going through this. they're very smart, very mature. thats when I said ok. my 12 year old heard her mom screaming and yelling at me on the phone. she comes up and gives me a hug and said, dad why is mom being such a b!@#$ and I said dont you ever say that about your mom. never. as of last month the kids want to be here, they're done being there.

I kept a journal and when my son wanted to know I asked him if he wanted to read it. He was older at this point.

my 7 year old has asked so many times and its difficult not to just tell her everything but I know when the time comes I'll be able to tell her everything and in the meantime just guide her to know what is appropriate and what is unacceptable in the way we are treated

My son keeps asking questions. I tell him that when he is an adult we can sit down together and talk. He says he’s old enough now. He’s 12. I’ve told him so many times “no you are not honey but I promise to tell you one day”

As an adult from divorced parents... Even as adults, please don't give the information, wait until they ask. I have never asked, and as an adult was willingly given the information and didn't care and didn't want it.

my 12 year old is very observant and has already googled our entire divorce (public record in my state) and has been asking questions since we separated... my 8 year old is clueless (thankfully) it's not easy to hide it sometimes. they figure it out sooner than you expect them to...
