More pushups: 2 ways While it's not a perfect metaphor, I think of strength in hardware and software. We can build up our muscles, joints, etc. This is what I consider hardware - making it bigger usually makes it stronger. This usually takes more time. On the other hand, we can also activate more of our current muscle fibers AND become skilled in certain movements and holds through learning movement patterns and activations. I consider this the software. While both take time, the second one is where a lot of "quick" gains happen. For example, you may have seen strength coaches teach someone a form cue that makes their lifts better almost instantly. Their body is the same size, but they found a way to do the movement more optimally. At a perhaps more granular level, we can also use more of a muscle (even at its current size). While this has pretty fast diminishing returns, it can also happen much faster than the process of growing a muscle. The second one is what the isometric warmup kind of does. It warms you up and then tests your peak voluntary strength in a position (usually the most difficult one). You could also just do a harder variation for a few reps. However, moving usually requires more energy so I find this one simpler. It's not SUPER common. Most people skip this and it's certainly not necessary. I try to be honest about how necessary most exercises are. However, for some people, this helps them unlock some higher gears they didn't know they had and helps them improve their pushups AND strengthen a weak spot. Try it out if you think it can help. Have a wonderful day #hybridcalisthenics
