AI is not just a six-layer ecosystem. At scale, it can become a self-reinforcing economic loop. In Ray’s Six-Layer AI Ecosystem Model, the six layers are not independent pieces of the AI economy. They interact. And once those interactions become strong enough, something more interesting begins to happen. Start from the bottom: Layer 6 — Governance & Capital ↓ Layer 5 — Energy ↓ Layer 4 — Data Centers ↓ Layer 3 — Infrastructure Semiconductors → Memory → Networking ↓ Layer 2 — Compute ↓ Layer 1 — Applications Models → Agents → Tools → Applications Capital and governance enable the physical buildout. Energy powers data centers. Data centers host the infrastructure. Infrastructure provides compute. And compute powers the models, agents and applications at Layer One. But the story doesn’t end there. If those applications solve real problems, increase productivity and create products that businesses and consumers are willing to pay for, Layer One begins generating economic value. Economic value creates revenue. Revenue can generate returns on the enormous amount of capital invested beneath Layer One. And those returns can attract new capital back into the ecosystem — financing the next generation of compute, semiconductors, networks, data centers and energy capacity. The linear stack begins to become a loop: Capital → Physical Capacity → Compute → Applications → Economic Value → Returns → Capital ♻️ That distinction matters enormously. Because spending hundreds of billions of dollars building AI infrastructure is only the first half of the story. The other half is whether the intelligence at the top can create enough economic value to justify — and eventually reinforce — the investment underneath it. That is why I increasingly think of Ray’s Six Layers in two ways: As a structure, they explain how the AI economy is built. As a feedback loop, they explain how the AI economy could sustain itself.
