You’re right. It was Spider-Man, Hulk and Wolverine. Let’s also be honest. It was really Spider-Man and Xmen due to the comicbooks. I rarely if ever picked up an Avengers comic book. 90’s it was Spider-Man, X-Men, Wolverine and the occasional Hulk. Hulk probably remained because he is iconic. In DC it was the era of Batman.

There's a reason they are casting the xmen cast as actors in their early 20s on 5-10 movie contracts. They are setting themselves up for the next 10-20 years of the real A-list characters.

in the early days they were HUNGRY. they HAD to get the audience to care about these characters so they built their stories up, and it worked. Now they have been coasting on that success for a while and it is running out, but they HAVEN'T done the same kind of build up for the new characters (with a few exceptions like Yelena, Agatha etc). They want the same investment and payoff with none of the effort making character-driven stories and then wonder why no one cares about the characters anymore
