Guys this is Alex Honnald, no he was not being negligent. What they are doing is called simul-climbing. It’s a form of climbing where both the belayer and climber are climbing at the same time. So it’s not like the belayer is waiting for climber to lead the route, and then the belayer climbs. Nope. They are both quite literally climbing at the same time and doing their own thing. It’s a very risky form of climbing and they are never holding onto the rope while doing this.

For those unfamiliar with climbing, Emily and Alex chose to simul-climb this pitch - in short, that means that the climber and belayer ascend simultaneously. Alex had given her a ton of slack to climb unobstructed because there isn't an expectation to fall on something "easier". This is why he is putting on his shoes because he is about to follow behind her. Needless to say, simul-climbing comes with inherent risk, case in point.
