I cannot imagine how it felt to be Diane Abbot yesterday. How disrespected and dehumanised she felt as she sat and listened to Rishi Sunak downplay racism. As she sat and listened to men(!) in parliament debate each other over comments that she should be shot. Knowing that the man who gave the Conservative Party £10million is the man who said that she made him hate all black women. 46 times Diane Abbot stood up in 30 minutes - hoping to get the chance to talk about comments made about her. It was like she was invisible. I am sick with RAGE at the appalling treatment and silencing of Diane Abbot. And not just yesterday. Diane Abbot has been the victim of the most horrific abuse and dehumanisation in the media and online. She receives more abuse and threats than any other MP. Frank Hester is a man who donated £10m to the Tories after being given £400m in government contracts. He said that he thinks Diane Abbot should be shot. That she makes him want to hate ALL black women. The government are refusing to give back the money. And what message does it send out to others when the political establishment fail to condemn the vile and racist comments made about her? Especially following the deaths of Jo Cox and Sir David Amess. We should be taking this very seriously. On a wider scale, doesn’t it also show what is wrong with parliament. That issues and policies that impact women or black people or disabled people are still being decided by white men. We need more diversity in parliament and we’re never going to encourage that if they continue to be vilified in the media and threats to them are downplayed. Diane Abbot is a trailblazer. A graduate from Cambridge (not that her education matters, she should be respected irrespective of this). The first black woman elected to parliament. The longest serving black MP. She is a black woman who shows up to work every single day despite the abuse she faces. @novareidofficial wrote a beautiful caption about her. Shame on everyone who silenced her.
