the program was NOT to “save the automotive industry” it was to get rid of old cars that didn’t fit the emissions standards. Nice try tho

Ah yes the program that ran two months is the reason resale value went up nothing else could have affected it 💀

No, it’s not, the cars that were turned different cash for clunkers were mostly 90s vehicles those cars have nothing to do with an 08 accord costing 8000

I dont think getting rid of less than 0.5% of cars in 2009 is having any real impact on the Used car market in 2026.

Those cars were horrible bro, people traded them in for a fw couple hundreds of dollars, and you wanna say they’re great?, they were small underpowered rust collecting emission plagued pos and you weren’t even alive back then to experience that

There are 297.5 million cars in the U.S. today a quick google search will tell you this and you’re telling me 700k which is .2% of how many cars in the U.S. today that were removed from the car market ruined it? Mind you most of the cars were older and not fuel efficient the whole point of the program was to get people into newer mkre fuel efficient cars.

The car had to get at least below 17 MPG to qualify. The program was also only ran for a month.

This isn’t the reason lol. It’s that car companies want to charge 100k for a new vehicle these days so that automatically inflates the used car price. 100k new or 50k used. A few years ago same truck was $35k new so used would be around 15-20k.

Prices in general are up dog, destroying a bunch of old cars 17 years ago during a recession isn’t changing that.

Those cars had terrible gas mileage. The program ended in 2009, almost all impacted cars would be over 20 years old now. The average car lifespan is less than 20 years, most of those cars wouldn’t be working now anyways. All those cars had less than 18mpg which is terrible.

I’m sorry…. What? You’re blaming today’s used car affordability crisis on a program from 18 years ago? Cars that were “clunkers” in 2008 would be 28+ years old now. The lack of inventory of 30 year old cars is not causing problems in 2026…🤣🤣🤣

This was 18 years ago there are many, many other things that have more significant impacts on the used car market today (tariffs, covid, dealership scams)

technically yes but no. Covid halted millions of production cars and the trend continues to today. that’s millions of used cars that should be in the market, but we’re never produced.
