what I noticed in the book is that he remembers the love of others to him: his college best friend, his kids, his fellow teachers who kept on inviting him for a drink, even the waitress and waiter who knows his habits...he remembers he was loved and had loved people, all before he remembers who he is.

grace not having any romance actually made his character absolutely filled with love, it's in the way he approaches his friends, the way he thinks of everyon, his love for his kids. like that man may not have a partner but by god he is full of LOVE.
