The River Thames in London appears brown primarily due to natural geological and tidal factors, not pollution from modern sources. The brown color is caused by fine particles of silt and clay suspended in the water. Here’s a breakdown of why it looks that way: • Geology: The riverbed is made of London Clay, a geological formation rich in these fine, muddy particles. The Thames flows over this bed, naturally picking up the sediment. • Tidal Action: As a tidal river, twice-daily tides constantly churn up and stir this sediment from the riverbed. This keeps the particles suspended in the water, preventing them from settling to the bottom and maintaining the brown color. It's a common misconception that the brown water means the river is polluted. In fact, the Thames is considered one of the cleanest urban rivers in the world, with over 125 species of fish. Its murky appearance is a natural characteristic stemming from its unique geology and tides. The Thames has a fascinating history, especially concerning its pollution. Would you be interested in learning about the 'Great Stink' of 1858 and how it led to the creation of London's modern sewer system?

The Thames is brown because of the high percentage of sediment not because it's dirty. Once it gets closer to the sea it turns more blue because it deposits a lot of that sediment.

nobody has ever said that about the Thames. It has historically had a reputation for looking awful.
