only issue is that I like it when the chacter/player can still see a greyed out version of the old map representing what they remember about the map.

Give it a try: DnD session where the group walks a trail or something irl so the battlemap is all around you. For accessibility, Google streetview for one session every now and then adds a kick, especially if its Kouvola. The amount of arguing about which road to take is astounding
