PURPOSE OF OVERSITE CONCRETE (GERMAN FLOOR) IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION The oversite concrete, commonly known as the German floor, is a layer of plain concrete placed on the compacted hardcore within a building foundation before finishing the floor. Although many people see it as just an extra floor layer, it serves several important structural and functional purposes in building construction. 1. Provides a Stable and Smooth Base The oversite concrete forms a strong, level, and stable base for laying floor finishes such as tiles, screed, terrazzo, or vinyl. It ensures that the final floor surface is firm and uniform. 2. Prevents Entry of Moisture When used together with a damp-proof membrane (DPM), the German floor acts as a barrier that prevents ground moisture from rising into the building, keeping the floor dry and protecting finishes from damage. 3. Protects the Hardcore Layer It seals and binds the top of the hardcore layer, preventing the movement or displacement of the hardcore materials over time due to foot traffic or vibration. 4. Helps Distribute Loads Evenly The oversite concrete spreads the weight of furniture, occupants, and equipment evenly across the ground, reducing the risk of localized settlement or cracking. 5. Improves Hygiene and Cleanliness By sealing off the underlying soil and hardcore, it prevents dust, insects, and bad odour from the ground from entering the building, making the interior cleaner and healthier. 6. Prevents Weed Growth It stops vegetation from growing through the floor by covering the soil completely with a solid, impermeable layer.
