⬇️see description for more info⬇️ If you havent watched my previous video on priming the clicker, and teaching your cat to follow your finger, I would suggest going and watching that first and starting there as it makes these next tricks much easier. Each training session should be 5-10 mins for most cats (shorter or longer depending on their mood/hunger). Once a day is optimal for learning. Sometimes Nova will train for 20 minutes, sometimes 1 minute. 1. Sit: Use your finger (or a treat) to lure their attention up, making them sit. As soon as their bum touches the floor, "click", and reward. You can add a visual finger cue such as 2 fingers, and an audible "sit" as you lead. Recommended training time: 2-5 sessions 2. High-five: While your cat is sitting, press a treat onto your open hand, like you are high fiving, keeping it there with the pointer finger of your other hand. Make sure it is out of reach of their mouth and wait for them to swat at it with their paw. If they touch the treat, click and reward. Once they do this every time, you can remove the treat and just point at your palm, then remove the pointer finger entirely. Estimated training time: 10-15 sessions 3. Down: Place a treat in your closed hand and put it on the floor, let your cat investigate and wait for them to lie down to get "under" your hand to get the treat out. Once their belly touches the floor, click and reward. Estimated training time: 10-20 sessions 4. Spin: Use your treat to lure your cat in a full circle, clicking once they are facing you again. Then add in the audible cue. Once theyre a pro at this you can try taking away the luring and just saying "spin", but this can take weeks. Estimated training time: 2-3 sessions with luring, 10-15 sessions without luring. Cat training is an extremely rewarding and fun activity for you and your cat. It will strengthen your bond and highly increase their (and your) quality of life. I would go as far to say that it is negligence to not atleast train some basics such as "sit".
