On Super Bowl Sunday, Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino fell into his family’s pool and was underwater for approximately five minutes after he disappeared from his parents’ view during a party. However, hours later, hospital personnel discovered Fiordilino was alive and breathing after having been transferred to the building’s morgue. Police records said officers who observed Fiordilino stated he showed signs of life before the doctor declared him deceased. A nurse had told Fiordilino’s family he was displaying agonal breathing, an involuntary reflex that can occur near death. Discovered alive, Fiordilino was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for treatment. Once there, several of his organs began shutting down. An MRI identified potential brain damage, while later testing reportedly revealed none was found. A GoFundMe notes that, as a result of the incident, Fiordilino continues to require extensive therapy and receives medical monitoring. He is breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.
