@srinagarkashmir0: #Nikkian Pass is a vital mountain route connecting District #Kulgam and District Reasi in Jammu & Kashmir. For generations, #Gujjar and #Bakerwal nomadic communities have used this route to migrate seasonally with their #buffaloes , sheep, and goats. Every year, these families risk their lives while crossing this dangerous glacier-covered pass. Many animals slip into deep gorges or fall from the icy slopes, causing heartbreaking losses and severe financial hardship. Despite these long-standing challenges, little action was taken for many years. Now, there is renewed hope. Thanks to the persistent efforts of local social activist Shehnaz Akhtar, who also serves as the District Women President, along with Mian Altaf Ahmad, the government has announced a 9-kilometre tunnel project to connect the two districts. This tunnel is expected to provide a safer and more reliable route for thousands of people, especially the Gujjar and Bakerwal nomadic communities. Nikkian Pass stands at an elevation of approximately 13,000 feet above sea level, making it one of the most challenging mountain crossings in the region. A safer road is not just about connectivity—it is about protecting lives, livelihoods, and the centuries-old traditions of the people who call these mountains home.
