Parallelism is one of the weirder philosophical theories to come from an otherwise very intelligent person. But what if there is something to it? Imagine a small child kicks a ball at your face, and it hurts. Of course it hurts. Now we can tell this story two ways. There is a physical story involving nerve endings, pain receptors, and so on. But there is also a mental story involving pain, suffering, and, I suppose, anger. Now the big question is how do those two stories relate? How does a lump of physical flesh interact with our mind? Most of us assume that there is a causal connection between our mind and our body, and vice versa. But in the 17th century, Leibniz offered an alternative explanation for the same facts. Leibniz argues that the mind and the body are like two clocks sitting next to each other. They both tell the time perfectly, and they both strike at the same time, but neither one causes the other to move. They are perfectly synchronised, but entirely independent. And so when the ball hits your face, your body will do one thing, and your mind will do another, entirely separate from each other. They were preprogrammed in what Leibniz called a pre-established harmony from what he supposed was God. But it could be fate, or any intentional cosmic force. No one has found a bridge between the mind and the brain, and Leibniz's answer is to say, we should stop looking for a bridge that might not exist. Instead, we should appreciate the terrible elegance of two worlds that are running silently, in tandem, and without any interaction.
