@xamethyzt: A dormant Prototaxites lineage has released airborne spores capable of spreading across the planet. The spores invade living organisms, causing rapid biological breakdown and mass fatalities. With no known defense against the ancient organism, human populations face a catastrophic extinction-level threat as the spores continue to spread. THIS IS PURELY HORROR FICTION. #prehistoric #fungi #disease #fiction #horror

For scrollers, Prototaxites are real and from the Devonian period. They’ve recently been relabeled as an ‘unknown and extinct branch of life’ because they lack chitin (found in all fungi,) but have lignin (found in plants.) Prototaxites were huge (24-30ft) and grew somewhat like trees (had growth rings,) but have no relation to trees (zero vascular tissue.) The picture is part of a fossilized one. 🦜
