@naxlex_nursing_prep: 🩺 Liver Biopsy: Key Nursing Care & NCLEX Tips A liver biopsy is performed to obtain a small sample of liver tissue to diagnose conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, or liver cancer. Before the Procedure: ✅ Obtain informed consent. ✅ Review coagulation studies (PT/INR, platelet count). ✅ Keep the patient NPO if ordered. ✅ Explain the procedure and instruct the patient to hold their breath briefly during needle insertion. During the Procedure: 🔹 The biopsy needle is typically inserted between the 6th and 7th intercostal spaces on the right side. 🔹 The patient is asked to hold their breath to reduce the risk of injury. After the Procedure: ✔️ Position the patient on the right side for at least 2 hours to apply pressure to the biopsy site and reduce bleeding. ✔️ Monitor vital signs frequently. ✔️ Assess for signs of hemorrhage, abdominal pain, or shoulder pain. ✔️ Observe for complications such as bleeding, infection, or bile leakage. 💡 NCLEX Tip: The most serious complication after a liver biopsy is hemorrhage.
