I have Bachelor in International Hotel Management and have been worked in hospitality for 7 years. From the bottom to manager. What need to tell you is that the employees is also not making enough. The boss also not making enough. The government is the one who take the most. The profit margin in hospitality (cafe, restaurant, hotel) is very low. But it would be a great cash flow machine if you manage it right. And cash helped a big time. Right now if you can use cash, it will be better for your favorite restaurant or cafe.

Not to mention we got to pay the eftpos transaction from October. It looks small amount but to the restaurant owners it adds up it’s around $3k a month for us.

Go back a few years and a basic pizza like a marg was sub $20 and now it $30+ for what is bread, a bit of sauce and cheese, maybe three basil leaves. If people have money they will leave food on the table, so blaming Ozempic isn’t the real issue. It’s the rapid rise of prices on basic food. A long black is now $7, a basic pizza is $30, a basic main at a pub is close to $40. Blame all other factors all you want but what the real issue is the baseline items increasing in price. If a marg pizza is now $30 at a pub, it’s going to be pricier at an Italian restaurant

Sometimes when I go to a takeaway shop, they have a little sign saying "prefer cash, 5% discount." I always pay with cash. Cash is still readily available—I don't know what city you're living in—but I agree, it is slowly disappearing. Still, takeaway shops and small shops are starting to put little signs up: "Discount for cash only."

As consumers not business owners this is spot on. We cook more at home so we can spend money on our favourites and experiences rather than spending bits here and there that don’t matter so much
