🎺 Louis Prima | 1910–1978 New Orleans gave the world Louis Prima, the singer and trumpeter behind “Sing, Sing, Sing” who later became the voice of King Louie in Disney’s The Jungle Book. Even his tomb fits him, topped with an angel blowing a trumpet. 🍗 Al Copeland | 1944–2008 Popeyes. Race cars. Powerboats. Christmas lights. New Orleans. Legend. Copeland opened the first Popeyes in 1972 and turned it into a worldwide name, while becoming just as famous around New Orleans for doing everything BIG. 🕯️ Harry Offner Harry Offner was the president of Lighthouse for the Blind, helping create opportunities for people who were blind or visually impaired. His final resting place is marked by a lighthouse-shaped monument, making sure that light never went out. 🎨 Sydney & Walda Besthoff If you grew up in New Orleans, you probably remember K&B, and Sydney Besthoff helped turn the local drugstore chain into 184 stores across six states. Sydney and Walda were also major forces in the city’s art scene, and their legacy lives on through the Besthoff Sculpture Garden in City Park, which they helped make free and open to everyone. 🔫 William Drew Winter | died 1871 William Drew Winter was shot at The Myrtles in 1871. Legend says he stumbled inside and made it to the 17th step before dying, although historical accounts say he actually died on the porch. Either way, his murder became one of The Myrtles’ most enduring stories. 🎺 Louis & Tillie Karnofsky The Karnofskys gave a young Louis Armstrong what he remembered as a second home. He worked on their coal and junk wagons, ate with the family, and they loaned him the money to buy his first cornet. Before the world knew Louis Armstrong, the Karnofskys were already part of his story. 🖤 These are just a few of the names and stories we’ve come across along the way. We’re NOLAchills, and the dead have a lot to say. Follow us if you’re ready to listen. 🔗 https://linktr.ee/nolachills #nolachills #neworleans #cemetery #famousgraves #History
