@theoryofkhaos: Psychology shows people don't just want to fit in. They want to fit in and stand out at the same time. This is called the Optimal Distinctiveness Theory 🧠 Your customer's brain is running two competing needs at once: ☝️ Belonging. To feel part of a group. ✌️ Distinctiveness. To feel different from the crowd. Most brands only build for the first need. They try to welcome everyone. But a brand that welcomes everyone gives your customer nothing to stand out with. Let's think of Gymshark for example: Gymshark didn't build for everyone who works out. Not yoga mums. Not casual runners. Gymshark built aggressively for weightlifters. So wearing Gymshark does two things at once: ☝️It says you belong to the lifting tribe ✌️It sets you apart from everyone else at the gym And so the lesson is... If you want a cult brand people wear, share, and defend, don't try to be everything to everyone. #branding #cultbranding #brandstrategy #brandpsychology
never really got gym shark. it's like a tweener between shein and Nike/Adidas to me

If someone ask you about Nike the other day. I answered it. I’ve read the biography of the founder. Nike started as a brand for joggers and runners. Because the owner ran track at Oregon. Jogging was starting to become known at the same time that Nike was coming up. The rise of jogging and Nike go hand-in-hand. So it actually was a very distinctive brand for quite a long time and then they started venturing out to other sports later. But they literally used to go to track meets around the state and up and down the West Coast on weekends to pedal the product and take orders. And it specifically started as West Coast jogging. It didn’t come to the East Coast or the rest of the nation for a really long time.
