Why do some people love deep philosophical questions, whereas other people hate them? Why do some people like to talk about life, and death, and truth, and meaning, whereas other people like to talk about more familiar things, like pets, or holidays, or family? Well, perhaps they are just built differently. Consider a philosophy like absurdism. Absurdism says that we are meaning-seeking creatures in a meaningless world. It says that we are craving explanations, and yet the universe as a whole has no explanations to offer. And yet not everybody can relate to this. Not everybody ‘seeks meaning’ or has the existential anguish that Søren Kierkegaard, Leo Tolstoy, or Albert Camus talk about. They just get on with their lives. Are they less ‘deep’ or less intelligent? Absolutely not. It might just be that they have different brains. Neurologically, we can point to various areas of the brain that can explain various philosophical aspects. For example, we can point to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to see how we make logical, goal-directed decisions, and exert cognitive control over our thoughts and our actions. We use theory of mind regions, like the prefrontal cortex. When we discuss or debate ideas, there's a part of our brain that even allow some people to be okay with just not knowing. None of this means that you are or are not born a philosopher. As with everything, we are a combination of our genes and environment. It just means that when philosophers tend to talk about ‘human nature,’ perhaps they are only talking about a specific kind of human.
