As per Dr Ruakere Hond’s explanation: “To return to the muka, to the binding, to the closing off of the child's end of that connection. That closing is a knot, the knot is that muka. It is here that the meaning of the term 'tītiki' can be understood within two contexts. The first is the action of binding (pūtiki), of girding (whītiki) or attaching (hōtiki), they are all linked to a tying action, to the knot itself or to the material used to tie. At the same time, 'tītiki' refers to the embryo in the womb, the gestation of the child. It is clearly appropriate that 'tītiki' is a foundation of a term.
