VAR should have called the ref to the screen. Ref can then still decide what to do. Many think ref has to follow the VAR, but he always has the authority to make the final decision. In this case a slowmo is essential to determine if there is contact, who makes the contact, so is ot a penalty or simulation of Mbappe. Too bad, we will never know what the ref would have done seeing it on the screen.

You admit that Mbappe was already falling before the contact. This means that the tackle wasn’t the cause of Mbappe fall. This means again no penalty. In slow motion or real motion this doesn’t change. I disagree that the VAR is not looking in slow motion. They really look in slow motion. They just can’t make any judgments on the gravity of the contact in slow motion. For that they need to judge the real motion contact. That the referee did accord the penalty directly doesn’t matter. The VAR still can intervene. Still it isn’t the VAR making the decision, they only there to give the referee the chance to rectify a possible bad call. At the end the referee will judge the action by himself with the help of the slow motion images. This doesn’t take away that the referee after reviewing the images could still give the penalty, cause Mbappe did it very well.

It’s a foul. As an attacker you know contact is coming and start to fall to lessen chance of pain / injury. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a foul.

no, this is a dive and this is exactly where slo-mo should be used. VAR not intervening is a complete failure. he dives before any contact. So, either 2 offences occurred, the first being the dive meaning that's the one that gets penalised. or - my argument, because he's falling the contact has no impact. it's not netball, we don't penalise contact with no impact. He's literally simulating a foul and your argument is that simulating a foul means the foul occurred???

The issue is that after Mbappe takes possession, the defender touches the ball with his heal. As such Mbappe just dives over his leg
