It was not romantic. We have letters Wallis Simpson was writing to her previous husband about what a mistake she was making and how she felt trapped and begging God that Edward wouldn't abdicate so they could quietly breakup.

I think he thought if he chose Wallis, the government wouldn’t actually force him to abdicate. I think he thought they’d make an exception for him and allow him to remain king.
