you do know you can pay for private and/or have private health insurance in the uk. you can then go to 100s of doctors until you find the one that tells you what you paid for to hear 🤔

Your GP visit and treatment were covered. As it wasn't considered an emergency, there was no need for A&E. If your GP didn't consider your symptoms mild or severe enough to be life-threatening, then paying for further investigation is your responsibility. There are plenty of allergy clinics that offer testing at very reasonable prices. NHS funding has to be prioritised for more serious health conditions, many of which most of us will face if we're fortunate enough to live to old age without any mental or physical health complications.

if you need an allergy test you’d get one, a singular case of hives doesn’t warrant it. i got a full allergy blood test through a dermatologist bc i had severe urtacaria

Just sounds like a bad GP- fill out an e consult and request to be referred to allergy clinic. Anaphylaxis UK has some good advice on their website

Sounds like you were given bad advice, when I was younger and had bad hayfever I had exactly the prick test that you mentioned and a course of desensitising injections for the particular pollen I was allergic to and I don’t have hayfever anymore, this was all on the NHS. I would suggest getting a second opinion.

I was a nurse in the nhs, now retired for medical reasons. When I was needing referrals for my neurology conditions I was aware of the long waiting lists so I paid out of my own pocket because I wanted to. To put my own mind at ease. I am proud of my work for the NHS despite this

If it was serious enough that it was deemed critical, further tests could be done, but as it wasn’t immediately concerning, what you can do is book in to an allergist out of own pocket? It may come down to services in your area too

Thats just a crap GP. They do exist. I had one that didn't believe in "teething". Ask to speak to the practice manager and complain about your experience and ask to see a different doctor.

NHS prioritise what they are referring for, they would only refer on if your allergic reaction was severe...if was only a rah they will just give you medication.. if you want allergy testing for a mild allergic reaction you can go and pay to see a private allergy specialist 🙂

Get your concerns, you had a reaction it was visible & worrying. Thing you have be aware of, if you hadn’t already become away of a possible anaphylactic allergy, by your age (no insult intended), it would a lowish percentage that one would suddenly appear. The immediate course of treatment would be to alleviate your symptoms & irritation, that been the steroids. You didn’t present with life threatening symptoms, so this would now be a process of first refining the possible allergy, with the GP over a period of time, or when & if the reaction returned. Then you would be given an appointment with the specialist to pin down the allergy & course of treatment.

I work alongside allergists, so they handle the clinical side, but on the referral process: allergy clinics (for food, drug, or other allergic conditions) are specialist NHS services, so you can't refer yourself, you need your GP to refer you first, and this is done through the NHS e-Referral system. Once your GP agrees a referral is needed, the NHS Right to Choose lets you pick which hospital or clinic sees you for most routine, non-urgent referrals, so if you're in London but there's a specialist allergy clinic in the North you'd rather see, you can ask your GP to refer you there. It's worth knowing this doesn't cover urgent cases, and it's an England-specific policy. Your GP refers you based on suspected allergic symptoms, they don’t need to know the specific trigger first. Working out the actual cause (via skin prick tests, blood tests, or food/drug challenges) is exactly what the allergy specialist does once you’re seen. Review the NICE clinical guidelines and use them to question why you’re not being referred

You haven’t said what you had eaten prior to the reaction happening. I’ve been referred for a test with an allergist before and we had narrowed it down to what had been causing it.

why are you boring the NHS with trivia, see the pharmacist and buy some antihistamines, if you keep getting reactions, weed out what it is yourself like any other adult would, then see the GP.. I assume when you get a runny nose, you would probably go to A&E.
