Helping him recognise why he's upset might be beneficial too - like is it that he's afraid of falling? You can reassure him that you're there to catch him. Is he afraid of failing and "letting you down" - you can reassure him that everyone works hard to learn new things and it doesn't always happen the first time. So on and so forth!
