@borderlinegenius9: Somalia is officially one country… but in practice, it's divided. 🌍🇸🇴 Most world maps show Somaliland as part of Somalia. But on the ground, it has its own government, military, currency, elections, and security forces. So why isn't it recognized as an independent country? The answer begins with colonial history. British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland united in 1960 to form the Somali Republic. But political tensions, decades of repression under Siad Barre, and the collapse of Somalia's central government in 1991 led Somaliland to declare that it was restoring its earlier independence. Today, Somaliland functions like a sovereign state in many ways—yet almost no country formally recognizes it. That has left it in one of the world's most unusual political situations: independent in practice, but not in international law. And even within Somaliland, the debate isn't over. Not everyone agrees that independence is the right path. This short explains how one country became two very different realities. #Somaliland #geography #Geopolitics #History #maps
