@chaoswithmaggie: We wanted this to work more than anything. ❤️ We truly hoped she’d accept these little ones as her own, but after watching her reject them twice, it became clear that continuing to try was only putting the ducklings at risk and causing her more stress. The reality is that, even if she had accepted them, they still would have needed a lot of help from us. Because they’re domestic ducks, they can’t simply be left to fend for themselves or eventually fly away like wild ducklings. We’ve also learned just how protective this mama is. Even when we bring her food every day, she won’t let us get very close. If she’d taken the ducklings in, we likely wouldn’t have been able to safely provide the care they would still need. So we’re going to let nature take its course. One day, we hope she gets the chance to hatch and raise her own babies naturally. ❤️ As for these four little ducklings… I guess they’re officially part of the family now. 🥹 Our plan is not to release them into the wild. Instead, we’ll raise them, slowly introduce them to the friendly flock that already lives on our property, and make sure they have a safe coop every night to protect them from predators.
