17 is almost an adult. Ole aunt needs to chill. That’s an almost peer at this point.

So I don't think this was just a spontaneous thing. I think the sister thinks the daughter has an underlying issue with this behavior. So she was trying to support " it takes a village" type mentality to kind of get through to her. Even the caller said she was like a second parent. I hope the caller didn't dismiss the behavior for the sake of not agreeing with the sisters actions upstairs.

Create boundaries! That conversation has damaged her relationship with your daughter forever.

I've spoken in discipline to my sister's kids, but only to back her up and to enforce her parent's rules and expectations. We are childfree and we know we are not experts. But to berate or name call or denegrate and use strong language would be a real failure on our part.

Honestly, I don’t even need to know what said if you as a parent don’t like what is said by someone else to your child It’s your right to be upset.

If your child is acting out in front of a group of family members aunts, uncles, grandparents it’s absolutely ok to call out bad behaviour and address it with your child….. why can’t she address it if your not going to? …. She didn’t berate her in front of the family and address something she felt strongly about….. if you depend on her for good things and has been a parental role, she obviously felt comfortable enough to address your child in a situation that was not so good…

Not ok of sister. Especially taking her niece in private to “ discipline” her. That’s not her place. Sister could have simply addressed the issue right there & then with calm words.. Done & done.

This is so funny. In our very large family, every aunt and uncle and grandparent had the unspoken permission to discipline any kid below 18. Every one of us got whipped by every ant, uncle, and grandparent. It didn’t matter whose kid you were. All those kids grew up and turned out pretty damn decent.

I would not appreciate by child being patented roughly, but we either trust our village or we dont. what does sister say happened?
daughter will encounter authority figures who have a different style in her life. teachers, coaches, police, bosses. turn this into a teaching moment on dealing with harsh personalities.

She shouldn’t do that and maybe her daughter really needed to be put in her place. Mum sounds great but most likely is more of best friends. Sister wanted to sort her out because she knows mum won’t.
