@cnbcmakeit: Back in 2022, Michelle Yeung felt disconnected from her work. Despite her high salary as a software engineer, she says spending her days behind a computer screen no longer felt meaningful to her. In 2024, she traveled to Japan to study matcha sourcing and preparation while balancing early morning Starbucks shifts with her full-time engineering job. Today, Yeung runs Matcha House, a cafe on Manhattan’s Lower East Side specializing in matcha. See how she started her business at the link in bio.

As someone who worked there for 3.5 years, the customers will make you miserable after a while. Also depending on the location there will be theft, assaults, and sometimes very mentally unwell people. This is at Starbucks. But owning your own matcha or coffee business could be very rewarding.

The happiest I’ve been in my career in 16 years ago when I worked as a server in an Italian restaurant, no health insurance no real money, sharing an apt with 3 roomates. On a good day I would make $100 per shift but I LOVED IT, just happy socializing and being carefree.
