Lezgin dagger (Lezg. Lezgi gapur) — a traditional Lezgin national dagger. It is a разновидность (type) of the Dagestani dagger. Daggers crafted by masters from Dagestan have always been considered, and still are considered, among the finest in the Caucasus. On each face of the Lezgin dagger blade, there is a single fuller positioned asymmetrically—that is, it is not centered but shifted toward the edge of the blade. It is also worth noting that in Lezgin daggers, the fuller was always offset to the left. The blades of the Lezgin type were typically single-fullered; the deep fuller on the right side was set slightly higher than the one on the left side. This construction provided maximum rigidity to the blade while keeping it as light as possible. On Lezgin-type blades, the area between the fullers and the cutting edges was often blackened in the form of wide bands. Historical sources indicate that for the Lezgins, the dagger was not only a stabbing, thrusting, and slashing weapon, but also a throwing weapon. For example, in “A Historical Account of the Campaign of Russian Troops in 1796 in Dagestan and Persia under the Command of Count Valerian Alexandrovich Zubov,” it is reported that: “On the 10th, a group of enemies attacked a detachment sent into the forest for firewood, but, repelled by riflemen, retreated; in doing so, the villains left behind one firearm and wounded a soldier with a dagger thrown into his back (the mountaineers are very skilled at throwing daggers at an opponent from a distance of 20 paces, holding it by the very tip of the blade).” Lezgin daggers were highly popular, enjoyed a strong reputation, and were produced widely throughout the Caucasus. Daggers of other peoples were often made following their design. According to encyclopedias and reference works on cold weapons, the blades of such well-known Dagestani daggers as those from Kubachi were usually crafted based on the Lezgin model. #art #lezgi #alpan #History #caucasus
