DAMASCUS MINI GUIDE 🇸🇾 Officially one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and in my opinion one of the most underrated and unbelievably beautiful 🧚 (Disclaimer: humans lived in surrounding areas earlier, but not necessarily recognised as a city.) Honestly the best thing to do is just walk around the old city, take in the beautiful architecture, sit in a nice cafe and watch the world go by. Theres so much to observe, so many layers of history, different craftsmanship, diverse groups of people and full of life and soul. 👉🏻 Must-See Sights: Umayyad Mosque (one of the oldest mosques still in use, 8th century), Azem Palace, Straight Street, Bab Touma & Bab Sharqi gates 👉🏻 Food & Drinks: Booza ice cream at Bakdash, fresh pomegranate juice, mezze (hummus, baba ghanoush, labneh), manakish, falafel (Syrian falafel is the best!), shawarma, the famous giant croissants, local tea & Arabic coffee ☕ - honestly Syrian cuisine is some of the best food you’ll have in your life 👉🏻 Markets: Al-Hamidiyah Souq (spices, sweets, souvenirs), old craftsmanship workshops (copper, wood, textiles), cafes in Bab Touma / Bab Sharqi 👉🏻 Day Trips: Maaloula 🏔️ (Aramaic-speaking Christian village), Bosra 🏛️ (Roman ruins & theater), Crac des Chevaliers 🏰 (Crusader castle and close to wineries), 👉🏻 Stay: Dar al-Mamlouka - traditional guesthouse in the Old City. Check out my Syria highlight, it’s truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. 📌 Tips: 👉🏻Getting There: International flights via Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Royal Jordanian, Flydubai, Syrian. OR get a taxi across the border from Beruit 👉🏻Visa: Check requirements - some can get visa on arrival (need cash on border! Uk visa cost $150), others need pre-approval 👉🏻Safety: I found the old city very safe, even walking around on my own in the morning and night 👉🏻WiFi: Can be unreliable as can SIM cards 👉🏻Cash is king, bring enough foreign currency to convert I’ve really been thinking of planning a visit back soon… some very fond memories in this city and great friends in Syria I hope to reunite with soon 🥹🇸🇾 #travel #syria #damascus #visitsyria #syriatravel
