A Foundational Black American inventor helped create an early version of that idea more than 200 years ago. His name was Thomas L. Jennings. He worked as a tailor in New York City. And he saw a problem every day. Fine clothes got stained. But washing them with water could damage the fabric. So Jennings came up with a new cleaning method. He called it

It helped clean delicate clothing without using the same washing methods that could ruin expensive garments. And in 1821, he received a U.S. patent for his invention. Making him the first known Foundational Black American to receive a U.S. patent. That matters. Because his success came at a time when opportunities for Black inventors were extremely limited. Think about that for a second. The next time you take a suit or dress to the cleaners... You're using an industry that traces part of its history back to Thomas Jennings.
