They want to shoot her and then just pull her once dead out of the chute with the skid loader because she won’t thrash around then and it’ll just be easier for them. I freaking hate the month of January. The horses are never this bad until winter really hits, and then it’s like every single one is a Greek tragedy. It’s like the Amish decide to call the local truck and trailer connection to take their unwanted horses away once winter really hits and hits hard. Oh yeah, some of them will use a phone and modern vehicles to make a little cash dumping a horse at a sale, that’s really no problem— but to use a phone to call a vet and put a horse down humanely? Nahh! Not when there is money to be made off it’s still barely beating heart… Call me a cynic… sure. Not all are bad, I completely agree but enough are. Enough are. Why feed a horse this weak anymore? They don’t see the point. Not when you can get paid $300, $400, $600 at auction for a horse like this. Money talks there. This poor horse, her end is so weak it’s trembling. She wants to get up. She can’t. She’s too tired. She resigns herself to her fate— head hanging in shame. The worker asked me what do we want to do? I asked him where’s Cody and he said he’s at a sale today but him and the owner / his dad aren’t getting along very well so he will be surprised if we get to come back. That’s why the barn is so disgusting this go around and why we weren’t told of any upcoming loads. I haven’t talked to Cody yet. I’ve been calling him all day. Feels like he’s avoiding me. Like there’s hard truth he thinks I’m not ready to hear. He’d be right. The gruff voice asks me quietly again on the phone, “what you wanna do? You want her or should I get the rifle?” “I want her. I’ll figure it out.” We hang up. I call Joe. The line trills and trills. The whole time I’m thinking— what the hell am I gonna do? How am I gonna get her out? I’ll just figure out a way. I always do.
