Some of the people calling this coercion seem to be interpreting it primarily through the lens of how the voice note made them feel, rather than focusing on what was actually said. It reminds me of situations where a person’s emotional reaction and the objective facts of what happened are not necessarily the same. For example, on Big Brother, there was a controversy where a woman believed she had been assaulted, but CCTV footage showed that no assault had occurred. Her feelings about the situation were real, but the evidence did not support the allegation. I think something similar is happening here. People are using how the voice note made them feel as evidence that it was coercive, rather than analysing the actual words that were spoken. Feeling uncomfortable, grossed out, or put off by someone’s approach is completely valid, but those feelings alone don’t determine whether something meets the definition of coercion. Those are two separate questions: Was the approach tacky or inappropriate? That’s a matter of opinion. Did the words themselves amount to coercion? That should be judged based on what was actually said, not solely on the emotional response it provoked.
