I fear they don’t know what being exes means because they always keep going back to each other. They first fell in love in high school. Yes, they were high school sweethearts. They were the perfect match. Everyone shipped them. Miu was part of the cheerleading team while Lena was a talented varsity player. Guys would line up for both of them, but in reality? They were so down bad for each other. “How was your date with that basketball guy?” Lena asked sarcastically, standing close to Miu at a friend’s party. “Would you really like to know, Lena?” Miu’s tone was seductive, flirty, like she was hinting something happened with that player, and Lena hated it. “Obviously not.” Miu just scoffed. They went back and forth throughout high school, trying to make each other jealous. Neither wanted to give in because of their pride, but eventually they couldn’t hold it in. “I hate what we’re doing,” Miu confronted Lena on their school’s soccer field. “You started it,” Lena replied. “I hate what we are.” “Don’t say that, Miu.” Even in high school, they were toxic, but they would never end. “I’ll admit it then. I hate seeing you with guys. Can we give it a try? I promise I’ll treat you well.” Words enough to stop whatever jealousy war they had. That’s how they started dating, but college got hectic. They had different dreams and paths. So… they ended it. It shouldn’t have been that easy, but both were too focused on themselves. “I won’t have time for you, Miu. I don’t want to hurt you even more,” Lena admitted during a walk. “I understand.” Miu was torn apart, but she did understand. “Let’s just find our way back to each other when the time comes.” One thing about Miu? She loved Lena. So they focused on college while keeping a mutual connection. Lena graduated first as she was older and found a decent job, but Miu couldn’t get out of her mind. “Congratulations on your graduation, Miu.” “Since we’re done with school… down to have a coffee?” Miu asked. A second run back. This time, they explored adulthood together. “My lipstick’s smudged, Lena!” Miu said in frustration after one long make-out session. “You just looked too pretty.” Miu always loved the way Lena looked at her. And Lena loved one thing about Miu. Her smile. One day, Miu went to Lena’s apartment drunk. “No way. Are you drunk?” Lena asked in disbelief. “I just had a sip. My friends were all drinking.” Miu gave one big smile, enough to ease Lena’s frustration. Lena smiled back and took care of her. Then they broke up once again. Miu had to move countries to manage her family’s business. They tried long distance, but with Lena being so busy, they found no time for a relationship. This breakup was harsh. “Are you being serious right now?” Miu typed furiously. “Do not break up with me over text, Lena.” Miu called. Lena picked up after ten seconds. “I am,” Lena spoke first. Miu scoffed. “You know what? Good luck forgetting my smile, Lena.” Miu knew Lena’s weakness. It was her. “Good luck forgetting about me. I hope when you kiss someone else, you’ll still remember how my lips tasted.” Miu did not back down. Lena suppressed the pain. “Then good luck forgetting the way I looked at you.” No one could replace Lena’s eyes. So another breakup. But eventually, they got back together after Miu came back. Lena even picked her up from the airport, Miu’s favorite flowers by the passenger seat. Miu saw Lena and scoffed, walking toward her with her head held high. “Thought we broke up?” Miu smiled teasingly. “Did we?” Lena took off her sunglasses. They were looking at each other’s favorite features once again. “That was our second breakup,” Miu added. “Just say you hate me.” Miu rolled her eyes before looking at Lena deeply. “I love you.” Three words.
