LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) create light when electrons jump across a semiconductor gap. When you drop the temperature down to a freezing using liquid nitrogen, a few fascinating things happen:The Bandgap Widens: Extreme cold causes the crystal lattice of the semiconductor to shrink. This increases the energy gap that electrons have to jump across.Higher Energy = Different Color: Because the energy gap is wider, the photons (light particles) emitted have higher energy.
