@wetheservers: One of the easiest ways to look polished as a server has nothing to do with carrying plates or memorizing a menu. If a guest is walking toward you, stop. Step aside. Let them pass first. It takes two seconds, but it communicates respect, patience, and genuine hospitality. The only exception? When a guest genuinely insists that you go ahead. Great service isn’t just what you say and do, it’s how you move. As a guest, I’m going to respect the person with a full tray in their hands, so that’s going to be really awkward when we’re both standing there

HOSPITALITY. So many people are obsessed with the action of taking orders and delivering food that they forget to host a guest of the house.

I do this because guests can be the most spatially unaware people on the planet so I’m protecting everyone

As a former server, I will ALWAYS let the server go first. Especially if they have heavy hands!

Is making a guest feel guilty bc they are in the way hospitable? It is a sign a respect to let them walk by first; of course.

Why do people in restaurants continue to call them guests if they still pay at the end of their meal ?

yes but the hand gesture is over the top. I might give a slight nod and smile, they very well know I'm letting them go first.

There are more times than not when I stopped to let a guest pass and they stop and tell me to please go ahead because they see me with a bunch of plates or they see that I’m busy and they will refuse to go first that melts my heart

It really depends on how busy the place is because imagine having to do that with all 10 guests passing by I’d rather be a little rude than have a guest complain that their order is taking too long
