@alexanderdroizman: Would you visit a place like this? I got some tips! I took the train from Chengdu to Ya'an and then a local minivan to Shangli Ancient Town for 8 yuan (1.5 CAD/ 1 USD). This town is so beautiful, very well preserved, and people are incredibly friendly. The architecture and rivers bring many painters to town, they are mostly in their 20s. I had some tea that a local recommended and then wandered around town and the surrounding footpaths. A lady intercepted me on the way into town and took me to her family guesthouse. It was lovely, clean, had a normal toilet, and it was in the absolute center of the town. There was an issue with my passport so she took me to the police station in her scooter. (Everything was okay.) Afterwards I went drinking at the town's plaza and ate a bunch of skewers, even spicy cricket skewers, and just took in the vibes everyone had there :) [travel, backpacking, sichuan, china, adventure]
