Babies don’t have face mites, but we pick them up early in life through close physical contact with parents, family, and friends. As we grow up and our oil glands become more active (especially during puberty), our faces become the perfect habitat. By the time we are adults, the colonization rate is nearly 100%. When they do cause trouble: Problems only arise if your immune system drops or your skin produces an extreme amount of oil, causing a population explosion. An overgrowth of these mites is linked to skin conditions like rosacea or blepharitis (eyelash inflammation). But normally, they are just harmless little passengers keeping you company.
