@the_menopause_revival: Women are being misled by the mainstream understanding of menopause. We have created a narrative that teaches women to believe they become hormonally deficient and biologically broken the moment ovarian hormone production declines. Women then spend years chasing the elusive promise of “hormone balance.” Yet if declining ovarian hormones alone caused menopausal suffering, every woman would suffer in the same way. They don’t. The biology is far more complex. The postmenopausal body retains an extraordinary intracrine system capable of producing active estrogens and androgens locally within tissues from circulating precursors. So perhaps we need to start asking better questions. Why do some women suffer profoundly while others barely notice the transition? I believe the missing conversation is neuro-metabolic health. Insulin resistance. Mitochondrial dysfunction. Poor metabolic flexibility. Chronic inflammation. An overwhelmed nervous system. When we begin rebuilding the metabolic and nervous system terrain, many women see profound improvements in their symptoms. And that forces us to question the narrative we have been sold. Perhaps menopause didn’t break the woman. Perhaps it exposed the health of the body entering it. Go slow and be gentle with yourself.

The Midlife Edit :
I really need to jump in here because telling women that menopause symptoms are never a hormonal issue is not only factually wrong, it is actually really harmful for women trying to get proper support. Saying there is no research linking falling hormone levels to menopausal symptoms is completely untrue. Decades of clinical evidence, including landmark research from the Endocrine Society and the International Menopause Society, show that declining oestrogen directly disrupts the thermoregulatory zone in the hypothalamus, causing hot flushes and night sweats. Clinical trials also prove that ovarian oestrogen loss leads directly to rapid bone density decline and urogenital tissue atrophy. You mention Fernand Labrie and intracrinology to back up your point, but you are misrepresenting his research. Labrie’s published papers state that while intracrine activity exists, total sex steroid levels drop drastically after menopause. Labrie spent much of his career developing treatments like intravaginal DHEA precisely because local intracrine production alone is not enough to prevent tissue atrophy in many postmenopausal women. It is also a massive leap to claim that because not every woman suffers severely, it cannot be hormonal. Large-scale research, such as the SWAN study, shows wide variation in symptom severity. Genetic studies on oestrogen receptor genes show that individual differences dictate how sensitive a person is to falling hormone levels. That is why symptoms vary so wildly from woman to woman. Metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, and gut health definitely play a massive role in how we feel, and adjusting diet and lifestyle can absolutely help ease the transition. Setting metabolic health against hormone support as an either/or choice is not helpful. Both matter. Dismissing the fundamental hormonal shift of menopause completely ignores proven biology and leaves women feeling like they have failed or done something wrong if lifestyle changes alone do not fix their symptoms. Women deserve the full picture, not a false choice between lifestyle and hormone health.

I don’t understand the HRT approach because I think the same thing…we are supposed to lose the hormones…it’s natural…there has got to be a more natural approach to support the symptoms. That being said, I am suffering terribly with insomnia and night sweats, and am “this close” to caving in to get HRT, as one supplement has stopped working (Menocerin) and it’s taking (it feels like) forever for another one (Estroven) to build up enough to offer relief. It’s pretty debilitating and the lack of sleep is causing a plethora of other issues.

“Menopause is not a simple one-size-fits-all problem, and it’s not just a metabolic issue that can be fixed with diet and exercise alone. The main change is a decline in hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, and those hormonal changes can affect metabolism, weight, sleep, mood, skin, and overall wellbeing. Some women move through menopause with very few symptoms, while others experience significant symptoms that may require medical support, including hormone therapy or other treatments. Lifestyle

We are all different. How are you able to tell what is happening in MY body. We are individuals. We should not be treated like the person this is what is the issue. Just because it was easy doesn’t make it easy for everyone
