@thehouseofphalo_: The amaMfengu originated as a confederation of various northern Nguni clans—including the amaHlubi, amaBhele, and amaZizi from modern-day KwaZulu-Natal—who became refugees during the Mfecane (or Difaqane) disruptions of the early 19th century. Displaced by the expansionist wars of King Shaka and other regional conflicts, they migrated southwards into Xhosa territory. Upon entering Gcalekaland (the kingdom of the amaGcaleka Xhosa) around the 1820s, they were formally welcomed and granted protection by King Hintsa kaKhawuta, the paramount king of the amaXhosa. Welcome and Assimilation by King Hintsa: Historical records highlight that King Hintsa initially integrated the destitute newcomers using the traditional African custom of Ubuntu and the practice of ukubusa (loaning cattle to the poor to help them rebuild).Declaration of Belonging: Upon seeing their desperate state, King Hintsa famously declared "Ngabam nabo" ("They are my people too"), granting them official recognition within the Xhosa nation. Land and Wealth: The amaXhosa allocated tracts of land around Butterworth (Gcuwa) to the refugees and distributed cattle among them so they could establish homesteads.Political Inclusion: Hintsa did not treat their leaders as simple subjects; prominent Mfengu chiefs were given seats on his royal council and participated in key territorial discussions. High-ranking refugees, like the young chiefs Matomela and Mhlambiso, even shared meals from the same dish as Hintsa’s royal heir, Sarhili. #amamfengu
