Arthoe as an idea actually dates to 2014/2015. The term was coined by a creator named mars, who with a number of other Black tumblr users would start art hoe collective. There are a number of articles documenting the rise of the movement which wasn’t just being subversive of mainstream cultural aesthetics; it was subverting the notion that the Art space was only for white straight white collar professionals.

Kanken backpacks ! Pastel striped shirts, high waisted light wash jeans, sunflowers! Rex Orange County and Tyler the creator <3 I was 15 and just started high school, fully an art hoe girl. I do remember people calling it that back then btw! Although I’d never admit that I was one loll. Good times :)

Idk why the comments are being obtuse. I remember the collective and being on tumblr and the term art hoe being related to the collective of young Black artists connecting with each other and their work without the gaze of elitists or predominantly yt art circles. There was even an explanation of why “hoe” was being used. Then all of a sudden I was a senior in high school (2018) and Kanken backpacks and VSCO and scrunchies and Van Gogh were all the rave and some people started stealing the term “art hoe” to describe it. I still see it now. It now has nothing to do with Black artists, it was completely appropriated and turned into it meaning whatever the same exclusive/ predominantly yt circles/artists want it to mean. It was a movement that got appropriated.
