There are some people who become part of your life so quietly that you don't remember a time when they weren't there. For Lena, that person was Miu. For Miu, it was the other way around. And for me, unfortunately, it meant that I spent most of my childhood watching two idiots slowly fall in love with each other without realizing it. I knew them before either of them knew what love was. We were eight when we met. Lena was the loud one. She was always running around with scraped knees, untied shoelaces, and absolutely no sense of self-preservation. Miu was quieter, but she was just as troublesome whenever Lena was involved. One afternoon, the three of us were sitting beneath a mango tree. Lena had stolen three pieces of candy from her mother's kitchen.

"I got these." She announced proudly. I looked at the candy in her palm. "There are three." "Yes." "And there’s three of us." "So?" Miu frowned. "You’re supposed to share it!" Lena immediately closed her fist. "I'm the one who got them." "That's not how sharing works." "It is when you're eight." I saw Miu looked at me. "Bam." "Yeah?" "Tell her." I sighed. "Lena, give Miu one." Lena looked offended. "You two are always against me." "You're holding all the candy." "That's unrelated." Miu laughed. It was one of those small laughs that she tried to hide behind her hand, and Lena stared at her for a second before quietly handing over one of the candies. "Here." Miu let out a wide smile. "Thank you." I saw Lena looked away slightly blushing. I remember thinking that Lena was unusually quiet after that. I didn't understand why then, but I understand it now. Growing up with them meant watching the same thing happen over and over again. Lena would complain about Miu stealing her food, then secretly leave the best piece for her. Miu would get annoyed whenever Lena forgot her umbrella, then walk half an hour in the rain just to share hers. They fought over stupid things, and they forgave each other even faster. Whenever one of them was absent from school, the other became unbearable. "Where's Miu?" "She has a fever." "Is she okay?" "Yes." "Are you sure?" "Lena." "What?" "I told you she’s okay." "I'm just making sure." "You sound like her mother." "I don't." "You do." Lena crossed her arms. "Whatever." The next day, Miu came back to school. Lena immediately shoved a carton of milk into her hands. "You look terrible." Miu blinked. "Good morning to you too." "You should've stayed home." "I feel better." "You don't look better." "I missed you too, Lena." I saw Lena froze and I nearly choked on my drink. Miu smiled innocently as Lena's ears turned red. "I didn't say I missed you." "You didn't have to." She walked away before Lena could answer. I stared at Lena as she stared after Miu. Then she suddenly looked at me. "Don't." "I didn't say anything." "Your face did." I smiled. "You like her." "She’s my bestfriend. Of course I like her." "That's not what I meant." Lena threw a pencil at me. I laughed as I avoided it. Back then, I thought it was funny. Years later, I would realize how easy it was to mistake love for habit when the person you loved had been beside you for so long. By high school, they were practically inseparable. They studied together. Ate together. Walked home together. Shared notes, headphones, umbrellas, secrets, and occasionally one brain cell between the two of them. Every examination week, Miu would have color coded notes while Lena would stare at her own blank notebook as if waiting for the answers to appear by divine intervention. "You're going to fail." "I won't." "You haven't studied." "I studied emotionally." "What does that mean?" "It means I thought about studying." Miu stared at her. "You're hopeless." "Yet you're still here." "Unfortunately." — It took university to finally force the truth out of them. They enrolled in the same university, though they chose different programs. I went there too, which meant I had the privilege of watching their relationship become progressively more ridiculous. —CONTINUATION 🔽— #lenamiu #lenalalina #miunatsha #oneshot #au
