it would be like a hairdresser turning away people wanting pixie cuts or simpler dye jobs for example cos they find them boring or it’s not their particular wanted art form to do, if u can do it n it’s part of ur job then it’s crazy to be turning away work??? in this economy?! 😭

I get turning people away that are requesting, for example, realism when you specialize in traditional, but simple line work is something Every tattoo artist should be able to make. And to turn those clients away simply "because its not my style" is just ??? You need to build up a proper clientele before you can start thinking about being picky.

I remember one tattoo guy saying learn your bread and butter tattoos like butterflies and stars... because doing a day of those is better than waiting to find someone who likes your art. You get the experience of tattooing and get paid. I think some tattooist forget what their job actually is and the history of tattoos

the artist I commissioned for my cutesy line tattoo did a lot of more complex art like that and its part of why I commissioned them. they where clearly competent and skilled, they had shown they could do confident line work without relying on the lines being overly thick and they had great customer reviews and healing timelines. . they ALSO approached my tattoo with just as much commitment and excitement as they probably do, there more complex work and thats the main reosen!

If you sell physical Art ppl come and pay for your art and creativity but if they come to buy your Service of permanent Body Alteration they don’t necessarily come for your art but for your Service. It’s like nail art, you can offer the most unique Designs and people will let you know that they love it and book with you and still want you to give them french nails, because you offer them a skill set AND the according a Service on their Body. You absolutely can refuse to do that but that won’t make u more Money.

also idk about you guys but the majority of tattoo artists post more complex stuff bc they seem more respectable and/or talented that way. you really don't see a lot of artists (especially established ones with a lot of experience) specializing in simple lineart bc it's kind of assumed anyone who's in the field can do it

She never claimed it was beneath her, just that it isn’t her style and so she doesn’t want to do it. You wouldn’t go to an oil painter and ask for a water colour. I’ve never met a tattoo artist that isn’t booked at least 2 months in advance, unless you are just starting out, there is no reason why you should accept jobs you don’t want to do. And frankly why would you want to book with an artist that doesn’t want to do your tattoo? That’s wild.

I dont care how cool someone's imagery looks, if i want something specific thats what ill want, lol. like yeah I can absolutely see people going to someone BECAUSE of their art, but at the end of their day its not their body, its not their choice!

On the other hand, I look for tattoo artist that specializes in the style I want. I wouldn't request a fine line tattoo from an artist that does blackwork and doesn't have any fine line in their portfolio

As a customer I want my tattoo to look good, so why would I book an artist that has a completely different style and may struggle to draw what I want? There are so many tattoo artists out there, you can and should find one that fits your style

I’m actually with the artist when it comes to completely different styles of art. Obviously if you prefer doing traditional ships and reject a traditional rose cause you don’t like them that’s unprofessional. But if you always do heavy line traditional, why are you expected to suddenly do fine line? Or if you only do black, why are you expected to do full colour? People specialise in what they prefer and are good at.
